IAS official and former CEO of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), Udit Prakash Rai, has been leave by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA)

IAS official and former CEO of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), Udit Prakash Rai, has been leave by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The vigilance department of the Delhi government served Rai with a show-cause notice on April 26, 2023, which prompted the suspension. According to the notice, Rai allegedly demolished a 15th-century building in South East Delhi’s Jal Vihar neighbourhood, close to Lajpat Nagar, to create room for his apartment.

Udit Prakash Rai, has been leave by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

The building, a Pathan-era Mahal

The building, a Pathan-era Mahal built in 1418, was situated on the grounds of the DJB. It was made of brick masonry and red sandstone and was included in the list of Muhammadan and Hindu monuments maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

The vigilance department of the Delhi government claimed that Rai had commanded the building’s destruction without the ASI’s consent. Additionally, the agency said that Rai had built his apartment on land that was larger than the 403 square metres allowed by law.

Rai has refuted the charges levelled against him. He claims to have gotten the required authorizations for the building’s destruction and that his home was built within the allowed boundaries.

The MHA was instructed to freeze activities after the security department of the Delhi government launched a preliminary probe. Still ongoing is the inquiry.

If the charges against Rai are true, they face disciplinary action, such as being getting fired from his job.
